Your Electronics are Energy Hogs

clipped from www.nytimes.com

the Department of Energy estimates that in the average home, 40 percent of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Add that all up, and it equals the annual output of 17 power plants

“Some of the larger big-screen TVs consume as much energy each year as a new refrigerator,” according to Noah Horowitz, a scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Whatever machine you’re using, consider having it go into sleep, standby or hibernate after about a half-hour of inactivity. The shorter the period, the more energy you save. Graphic-intense screen savers can actually waste power.

Unplug unused external power supplies because they can draw energy even when they’re not connected to a device.

Consider buying a notebook PC, rather than a less-efficient desktop. Because notebooks are designed to run on batteries, they’re equipped with chips and drives that draw less power.

Keepon Dancing

A robot blob that dances “soulfully” to different tunes could pave the way for machines that interact more naturally with human beings, researchers claim.

Marek Michalowski of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, US, and Hideki Kozima of the National Institute of Communications Technology (NICT) in Kyoto, Japan, programmed the squishy, yellow robot, called “Keepon”, to pick out the beat in a piece of music and move along in time. It can also track the rhythmic motion of a person or another object and move in time to that. [Read More]

Clocky The Alarm Clock

The alarm clock that runs away and hides when you don’t wake up. Clocky gives you one chance to get up. But if you snooze, Clocky will jump off of your nightstand and wheel around your room looking for a place to hide. Clocky is kind of like a misbehaving pet, only he will get up at the right time.

Computerized Ergonomics System

Recently, a group of researchers involved in medical research for persons with spinal cord injury has decided to design and build a workstation which would most closely answer the needs of general computer users. The result is GRAViTONUS®, a revolutionary multifunctional computerized system, created to provide for optimum ergonomic conditions at work. It enhances users` comfort, improves their productivity and keeps them in good health.

The multifunctional GRAViTONUS® system allows moving the user in space freely. It comes with an on-board computer which constantly analyses positions of a body, measures local temperature and pressure on different body parts. The system adapts to the user depending on his or her psychophysical activity thus creating maximum comfort, anticipating his or her desires.
